Kandinsky Squares, indoor studio

I decided to move my “studio” inside. Getting warmer here. I’m also working smaller. I started working at my drawing table but my shoulders started bothering me. My table and chair are so old that I couldn’t adjust them! I moved easel and small side table inside. So glad I got that easel as it is easy to move.

Anyway, I’m working smaller 6″ and 12″ [16.24 cm and 12.48cm]. I’m using acrylics as I tend to make a mess with oils. [not good in house] The 6″ squares are on canvas; the canvas is rough so 2 coats were necessary. The 12″ acrylic paper is smoother and works well. I call them Kandinsky squares cuz I am adapting shapes he made. I identify with him as he started out doing fairly representational work, moved into abstraction and finally invented shapes with a flat application of paint. It is his last work that I am referencing. He also used watercolors and gouache for his later works as well as oils. 6″ on left, 12″ in middle.

My book

Infinity

UPDATE 9/5/2023 After I posted this I starting not liking it. That black line wasn’t working for me. I’ve since have painted over this.

After I posted my complaint about the weather, it got cooler here. I took advantage of it and spent about four hours each morning, painting. I’m not going to push my luck though. My plan is to work indoors drawing and painting smaller works with acrylics. Oils are too messy for me inside. Anyway, I’ve been looking at late Kandinsky works and may adapt some of his shapes. If you look closely to the Infinity panels you may see shapes that are not solid colors but have patterns within them. Kandinsky shapes. There are only 2 on each panel. Each panel is 36″ square or 91.44 cm.

Suddenly Summer

Summer is here early, imo, and is too hot to work during the day. I got the background for Infinity done but had to wait for the oil to dry somewhat and in the waiting, it got just too hot in the garage. I could drag everything inside in the extra bedroom that is holding xmas decorations and recent paintings. Not crazy about the idea of painting on carpet and a somewhat confined space.

Trying to decide on a middle ground for this last painting. Came across Chaos theory which led me to fractals and patterns called unicorn and dragon. I’m considering doing that as a middle ground and then have floating shapes for foreground. If I am understanding correctly, some shapes[Mandelbrot fractal ?] just keep going, repeating smaller and smaller, not stopping[?] like infinity. Anyway….

Book is live on Amazon. Free for Kindle Unlimited ebook. I hope you all check it out. Working on second book.

New Painting Triptych

I decided to try a triptych to have a bigger scale for the painting. I painted the background the same colors and used the black parallelogram to unite the 3. I then painted the shapes on each panel separately using the same colors in all three. I’ve started looking at late Kandinsky paintings of his shapes for inspiration.

Controlling Chaos, triptych, oil on canvas, each panel is 32″h x 16″w total size 32″h x48″w or 81.28 cm x 122 cm
