Shapes in Space (Monet’s Garden)

I wanted to use different colors trying to get away from the primary colors I had been using. I don’t usually use green or I use it sparingly in a painting. I have various tubes of green colors, viridian, sap green, yellow green, teal so I thought I’d use them all! While I was painting I kept thinking of a late painting of Monet’s. Yellow irises, I think, with green foliage and blue sky, low view point. I think it may be in Marmottan. And my memory may be faulty. Anyway, I like how this came out.

Andromeda

Third in the constellation series. I like the idea of using the constellations as a loose placement of the “stars”. I may revisit this in the future. Andromeda, oil and paint sticks on canvas, 36″ or 91.44 cm square, 2024

Cassiopeia

Second in the Constellation series Cassiopeia. 36″ or 91.44 cm sq, oil and paint sticks on canvas. link here for mythology story. Sorry about the wonky placement of the close ups. Hopefully, this is better. Also, the painting looks a bit more red. The closeup at top is more true to color. I don’t know what else to do about that. It seems to be that when the image is uploaded, the color somehow changes. I use the 50mm lens for my camera, halogen lights. i don’t know what else I can do. I’ve even taken pics outside under natural light and the color still seems off. Maybe youTube has a video about this, lol. They have videos on just about everything!

Cepheus

The last 3 paintings of the Becoming series are inspired by 3 constellations : Cepheus, Cassiopeia, and Andromeda. I think of these as a tie in with my scifi writings. If you’ve read my books then you know the significance of Andromeda. I used the stars only as a loose placement of the “stars” in the painting.

Latest painting

This is the latest painting in the Becoming series.

discovery of another painter

Discovered an Abstract Expressionism painter Paul Burlin on youTube. Had a recent show of his work at a gallery in Santa Fe. Hadn’t heard of him, love his work.

It is, 1959, o/c, 84″ x 66″

just a note

I replaced two of the images of paintings that didn’t look right on my computer. Overexposed or too yellow. I got the halogen lights and reshot them yesterday. I meant to include the overexposed/yellow images in the original posts so you could compare on your own screens. I hope you can see the difference with your screens here. Shapes in Space 2. color corrected on left and overexposed ‘original’ on right.

Becoming: Shapes in Space 2

Next in series of Becoming. I’m posting 2 images: one on automatic settings and one with a lower ISO. For some reason, this painting and the previous one are coming out too yellow when I take a picture of the entire painting [36″square] the detail pics look fine. I’m not using color corrective lamps inside so that probably is the problem, however, this is the first time along with the previous painting that this has happened. Need to figure out what is causing it. The close ups look great but the 2 images of the whole painting looks washed out. On right, automatic setting, natural light on left, lower ISO setting 100 vs 200 automatic. I’ll have to play around with it and see what works.

UPDATE: I ordered some halogen light bulbs to use with taking pics of my artwork. I used to use the blue color corrective photo bulbs for when I was shooting slides. There are florescent color corrective bulbs but more expensive than halogens.[one bulb was $10] If the halogens don’t work I could try them.

,image of painting is color corrected. 2-18-24

Anyway, Becoming: Shapes in Space 2, oil and paint sticks on canvas, 36″ sq. or 91.44cm sq.

Becoming: Shapes in Space

latest in Becoming series. Taken under natural light. Indoor lighting came out too yellow. 36″ x 48″ or 91 cm x 122 cm, oil and paint sticks on canvas 2024.

This was painted over another painting, texture is crusty and some of the previous painting is left peeking through. Lighting of closeups is indoor. Had fun with this.
