Checking something out
These are the last 2 paintings of this series I’m calling The Geometry of Time. They both are triptychs. During the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance triptychs were often found as alter pieces in European churches. They were hinged and could be opened and closed. It has evolved into just 3 sections of paintings related to each other in some fashion. In my masters thesis exhibition, I had 4 related paintings, a quadtych (?). They related to the 4 Quartets of T.S. Eliot’s poem. I think I have shown them here in this blog somewhere. Anyway, I say this all because in these 2 instances my motivation is somewhat more mundane. I wanted to work on a larger scale and I thought this would be a way to do that, sort of. I’m glad I took this photo as I have a record of how the three relate to each other. I marked the backs with an arrow only to find it was wrong!
I’m considering putting a Hvac unit in the garage but it is a bit pricey. I am thinking after these paintings I may take a long break from painting and concentrate on my writing. I’ve gone from The Elements of Form from undergrad to this imagery post grad school. I think I may be done with these. [never say never, right?] Right now, I feel like I have exhausted this work. The only thing I can think of to do is to work on a much larger scale and circumstances prevent that right now. I don’t think it would add any meaning to my work anyway.[wish I had a Monet waterlilies studio, Ha!]
In my thesis I talk about the idea of the moment when brushstroke, texture, line, the elements, become a painting whether it is something recognizable like the human form or abstract shapes. It is painting about painting. It exists in the realm of non discursive thought [so how can we even talk about them?]The paintings are the physical approximation of those thoughts, a metaphor.
